Welcome to the 2005-2006 4-H Year

Welcome to the new 4-H year! We're excited to offer new opportunities for youth and leaders this year. Watch The Clover Courier during the year for local, regional and state-sponsored programs you will want to attend.

We have a new web page: www.extension.uiuc.edu/adams (same address new look)! The Adams/Brown Unit web site has a new format and is user friendly! Please be patient with us as we learn all the new features so we can get our information posted for you. This 4-H newsletter will be the only issue available at this time along with the Illinois Leader. It will not require Adobe Acrobat.

A special thank you goes to R.D. Coonrod from Loghoggers for 2 beautiful carvings that were silent auctioned at the fair and the proceeds sent to 4-H. Also, thank you to Randy Frese for having both winning bids! Thank you to Ursa Farmers Cooperative for providing sandwiches at the 4-H Swine Show.

4-H Hurricane Relief

You Can Help Hurricane Survivors

The Louisiana 4-H Foundation has set up a fund to provide materials and assistance for "dislocated" 4-H members and for evacuees located at the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center. Send checks to : Louisiana 4-H Foundation,PO Box 25100,Baton Rouge, LA 70894-5100.

Mississippi Operation 4-H Relief wants 4-H members to write letter of encouragement. The letters will be distributed through Mississippi 4-H agents and 4-H youth to young people affected by the hurricane.The address is: Mississippi Operation 4-H Relief–Letters of Caring & Hope, Box 9641, MS State, MS 39762

Adams County Spaghetti Luncheon Oct. 2

St. Brigid's Hall in Liberty is the place to be on October 2nd. The menu consists of spaghetti with meat sauce, lettuce salad, bread stick, dessert, and drink. Serving is from 11:30 am-1:30 pm. The cost is $5 for ages 12 and up, $3 for ages 11 and under, and families eat for $20.

The Silent Auction is from 11 am-2 pm. Come out and support 4-H and then stay for the Achievement Day Awards Program!

4-H Leader Meetings

Leaders will receive: enrollment packets and resource material. If you are unable to attend one of the meetings, then you will need to call and schedule a time to meet with LeAnn or Sharon.

Window Displays

"Make the 4-H Connection" is the theme for the Window Display Contest. All windows must be completed by Sept. 28th. Please call the office by Sept. 23rd to let us know of your participation and window location. So far, Ursa Willing Workers, Central Live Wires, Payson Progressors, Quinsippi, Fall Creek, Camp Point Co-Op and Burton Flyers will decorate windows! Results will be announced at Achievement Day.

Achievement Days Federation Meetings

Adams County Achievement Day

October 2nd at 2:00 pm

St. Brigid's Hall, Liberty

Adams County Federation will meet at the conclusion of Achievement Day presentations to organize and plan for the new year! If you are in high school, come join us!

Brown County Achievement Day

October 4th at 7 pm

Mt. Sterling Community YMCA

Brown County Federation will meet at 6:00 pm before Achievement presentations to organize for the new year. This meeting is open to all who are ages 12 and over! Sandwiches will be served.

Every club is recognized on stage plus every attendee receives a gift at Achievement Day! Leaders celebrating milestones in 4-H are also recognized! Come out and show your support of 4-H!

New/Revised Project Books for 2005-2006

Consumer Savvy–Youth consume more than $175 billion of goods and services each year. Through Consumer Savvy youth will become informed and responsible consumers in today's dynamic market place. Grades 3-12.

Entrepreneurship: Be the E–Youth will discover the world of entrepreneurship with this multi-level guide. Activities assist youth in learning what it takes to be an entrepreneur, practice skills needed to function successfully as an entrepreneur, and explore types of businesses, products and pricing, marketing, partnership, agreements and contracts. Grades 7-12.

Outdoor Adventures–Youth will experience the fun of the great outdoors. They will progress from day hikes to overnight camping trips to extended backpacking expeditions. Learning experiences relate to food, shelter, ethics, safety, navigation, equipment, and camp management. Grades 3-12.

Revised:

Theatre Arts: Imagination in Action–Youth will put their "Imagination in Action" to use with this dynamic theater arts series. Revised and new, these materials offer activities in acting, puppetry, and stagecraft. Grades 3-12.

Corn, Soybeans, and Small Grains available in January. If you paid for a corn, soybean or small grain project book last year, please let us know if you are not staying in that project area and want a refund. Otherwise, you may sign up for it again and we'll get the book to you as soon as it is available.

Meat and Other Protein Sources available in November.

Youth and Adult 4-H Opportunities

Edge Conference (Experiencing Discovery, Growth & Excellence) Nov. 19 Cost is $65 Springfield U of I Extension Center

Edge is for 7th and 8th grade youth and focuses on personal strengths, social skills, choices, goals, and community involvement. Applications are available in the office and due to the State 4-H Office by Nov. 9th.

2005 North Central Region Volunteer Forum Nov. 10-13 in Rapid City, South Dakota

Shining Bright in 4-H is the title for this rejuvenating experience for adult volunteers. It's not too late to register and attend. A registration booklet will be available at the Leaders Meetings.

Illinois Farm Bureau & Affiliates 4-H Premier LCP Award This award is sponsored for Illinois 4-H members at least 17 years old by Dec. 1. The purpose of the award is to reward members exhibiting outstanding leadership, citizenship, cooperation and professionalism during the past 4-H program year. Although all members can apply, the program is designed to recognize and promote achievement in the agricultural industry. The application is available in the office. The deadline for submission for state judging is Dec. 14.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards This award recognizes individuals in grades 5-12 solely on the basis of their volunteer activities. Awards are presented on the state and national levels. Applications are available in the office and due Oct. 31st.

Youth Venture Youth Venture provides seed money grants of up to $1000 for new youth-created, youth led sustainable ventures that benefit the community. Youth ages 12-20 who want to start a new ongoing environmental club can get guidance on how to plan, organize, and launch their venture, along with funds for start-up expenses. Horse News

Horse Meeting Oct. 3rd

A Horse Meeting will be held at U of I Extension in Quincy on Oct. 3rd at 6:30 pm. Parents and youth are welcome to attend. We will discuss the 4-H Horse Show and plans for the 2005-06 year.

Fall Tack Swap

Quincy Farm & Home Oct. 15th from 9 am-2 pm

Horse Chiropractor

Horse Crazy 4-H Club will sponsor an event in October for youth to have their horse seen by Dr. Max Hartlet. The procedure costs $40 per horse. Call Deb Schaffer for more information at 938-4347.

Barrels and Poles

Deb Schaffer, Horse Crazy 4-H Club, will provide lessons for $10 on Thursday evenings or Sunday afternoons. To schedule a lesson, call Deb Schaffer at 938-4347.

Horse Fun Show

Sept. 30 at 7 pm at Kevin/Tamara Grafton's arena Rushville

Everyone must sign a liability form before participation. $2 per class or $15 per person for the night. The office has a show bill.

Quincy Saddle Club Fun Show

Oct. 15 at 10 am at the Adams County Fairgrounds

Entry fee of $1 per class or $5 for the whole day. The office has a show bill. For more information contact James & Brenda Wietholder at 335-7095.

Dog Obedience Classes

Beginning classes start the first Tuesday of each month from the Quincy Kennel Club. The fee will be $2 per class. Proof of vaccinations is required (rabies, DHPPC, Kennel Cough). The youth must be enrolled in Dogs and provide their 4-H card.

A training collar and 6 ft leash will be needed and can be purchased from the Kennel Club. Seminars are being planned on numerous topics for youth at no charge. For more information, please contact Angel Viar at 645-3256 or 430-3256.

John Wood Community College Workshops

John Wood Community College Arts WeekOct. 16-22 John Wood is offering classes on Oct. 22 at the Paul Heath Center at no charge. The following classes are available: Release Your Creative Energy Drawing Workshop (supplies furnished), Photographic development techniques using the new darkroom at JWCC, Wild about Pottery with Becky Butler, Computer Generated Art, and Digital Photo Touchup Techniques. Advance registration is required by calling 641-4903.

JWCC Technology Center is open to the public free of charge on the following days: Mondays from 3-9 pm, Tuesdays from 9 am-noon, and Fridays from 9 am –5 pm. Twenty computers with internet access are available. For more information, contact Janet McGovern at 641-4905.
