Our Evanston kayak fishing class encountered what appears to be a cormorant, from online searches. It rode along on one of the yaks for half an hour or so. Neither bird nor humans had any luck. In 60 years of living near the lake, it's something I've never seen. Is this unusual? I do have pictures.
