I have a 3 to 4 year old tree hydrangea. It had flowers on it last year and the year before that. This year, as of August 16, there are no flowers on it at all. Can you tell me why it is flowerless and any suggestions that will make it bloom? I did not prune it at all last year or this year.

Hi,

the only thing I can offer is that either the plant is growing in too much shade, they do prefer more sun to bloom well or something happend to the flower buds as they were forming. Tree hydrangeas bloom on the new growth. If there was a late frost while the buds were forming it could have an effect on the bloom. I might suggest pruning in the spring before new growth starts to encourage a nice compact shrub and then when new growth starts that is the growth that should carry the buds for that season bloom.
