Hi,
Late seeding has its drawbacks and good points. If the seed is put down and weather is good for germination it may come up but hen if the weather turns cold real fast the young seedlings tend to have a harder time going through the winter successfully. On the other hand if yo put seed down and the weather turns cold, seed doesn't germinate but lays in the soil dormant till spring it will come up and grow then and have all summer to develop. This is ofthen called dormant seeding but it really is a gamble. I might suggest waiting until spring when soil is workable and you have a good chance of getting a successful stand.
