We are planning to buy a new home perhaps during the winter. Have extensive garden of hybrid day lillies that we do not want to leave behind. Would it be possible to dig up the day lillies for future planting in the spring in the new home (nearby). How would we store the day lillies over the winter?

Hi,

One way in which you might think about is to wait until the plants go dormant (tops die back tothe soil). Then you could dig up the clump and put it into a container large enough to hold the root. You might also consider puting several roots into a large container. Make sure that the clumps of roots have soil attached. You might even cover the clumps with newspaper to maintain some moisture around the roots but not enough to cause rotting or rowing. These clumps can then be put somewhere where they will not freeze but stay cold and dormant. An unheated garage is good (35-40 degrees). during the winter inspect to make sure they donot dry out and add water only to keep them barely moist but not enough to result in them starting to grow. You should be able to keep them all winter and then next spring when soil is workable replant into the new location.
