I was replanting sunflowers in my parkway and noticed a number of white pupae in the soil. I did some searching and they look like white grubs. They are not under grass, and I did find many but not sure it's an infestation. It's early in the season. Do I need to worry about them. Would really like NOT to use insecticides.

Hi,

It's not unusual to find grubs in garden areas but they often do not cause any damage to the plants that are in the area. I don't think I would treat the area.

OK, good. Should I be watching for plant stress if they do start eating roots, or begin chomping on the leaves?

Hi, Yes, I would just monitor the plants but I don't think you'll see much below or above ground damage.
