Cutting a tree

One of my white pine trees has turned completely brown and I am being told to cut it. Is it necessary to cut the tree and ground the stump OR one can just cut the tree at the ground level and leave the stump flat with the earth? The cost of doing one is double vs. the other. What should I do?

Thanks

Hi,

If you are not going to put another tree in its place and if the stump is not going to interfer with garden activity you can cut the stump flush with the soil and leave it there to rot.

Wont the rotting tree harm the surrounding trees/bushes and attract disease?

Hi,

No, about the only thing you might see are some mushrooms growing in the vacinity of the rotting wood.
