I have a green ash tree that is 32 years old and the branches farthest from the trunk have smaller and less leaves each year. I assume the tree is close to it's life expectancy. Can I prolong it's life buy cutting the outer branches as to give the main tree a bit more life? Also would deep root fertilizing help at this point as well? Thank you

Hi,

Trees do have useful lives and yours may be showing signs of age. About the best thing yo can do is to remove any branches that are dead. I would not necessarly cut back the branch to a point on the interior. Also any type of watering and fertilization program will help trees that are under some type of stress. Anything you do needs to be done so adequet amounts of water are applied under the drip line of the tree and to get a good ground soak to be of any benefit. This may at times not be very practical due to the amount of water needed to result in a benefit.
