Hi I had a new lawn put in three weeks ago. I had the guy use Pennington Sun and Shade. I have watered it as instructed and had new grass grow in six days, It's been hot and humid so I watered it three times a day to keep it moist. Now the thin grass is about 3.5 to 4 inches tall and also now I am getting new thicker blades coming up. I'm confused as to the new thicker blades and not sure if I need to keep watering twice a day and also when to cut it the first time. I am afraid to rip up the thin stuff and walk on it. I just don't know what to do at this point.

Hi,

New seedings need enought moisture to germinate and start growing. I sounds like you have accomplished this. the thicker blades are more than likely different grass varieites that were part of the mix you bought and are normal. As far as watering. right now you need to keep the area moist but also want to start the grass growing roots. That means you may want to reduce the watering frequency to the oint where you are putting on maybe a total of 1 inch of water per week. During the hot weather we have been having yo need to monitor this and adjust as needed. You should also consider cutting soon. Letting the grass to get too high before cutting is just as bad if not worse than cutting too soon. Cut at about 3 inches right now and make sure the more blade is sharp to preven tearing etc.
