Elm tree shoots

Harold came in the office and said that he had a big elm tree cut down (an 80+ year old elm tree) and now there are elm tree shoots coming up from the remaining roots. He had several before the tree was cut down, but now there are a lot more. What is the best way to take care of these shoots?

Hi,

One way is to actually dig up the roots that were left behind but that is sometimes a major task so the alternative is to just keep on mowing them down with the mower and eventually they will run out of stored food reserves and not come up anymore.
