Oh those Beetles!

I'm here with what seems like my annual beetle question. This year I was miserly and held off on putting down the beetle killer that soaks up in the roots of the tree. I foolishly assumed that since i treated for grubs last year and there didn't seem to be any beetles showing up that we were going to be ok this year.

Now suddenly over the past couple of weeks I'm now noticing our birch trees are taking a beating. I'm wondering what hte best approach is. Is it too late to put a grub treatment down and what else can help now?

At this point, if it is a small tree, it can be sprayed with a product containing carbaryl which will kill the beetle when it feeds. Otherwise, more importantly, keep the tree watered and healthy, and it will be fine for next year. Treating the lawn for grubs should only be done IF YOU HAVE GRUBS. Otherwise it is a waste of money and chemicals to put that stuff down if they aren't even there. The number of adult beetles in your yard has absolutely no correlation to whether there are grubs and vice versa!

Thanks for your reply. We did have grubs last year pretty bad and treated them. Not sure this year. Took your advice on keeping the trees watered and sprayed as high as we can reach. My wife also bough one of those beetle traps (which i think actually brings more into the yard) and it seems to be doing a decent job so far.

You are correct when you say the traps bring more to your yard - the office joke is that when you buy them, they should be given as gifts to all your neighbors!
