Planting Nuttall Oak (IL)

I read an article you wrote last fall regarding the best (native) trees to plant in Illinois. I live in the metro east (Edwardsville) and would like to plan a Nuttall oak as well as a blackgum tree in the back of my newly built home. What is your opinion of planting these 2 trees and how far apart should they be?

Thanks, Tim Hogan

I'd say go for it... Keep these two species well-spaced apart as both trees can attain heights in excess of 60-80 feet.

Should both species be planted in the fall?

Spring or fall...totally your choice based on planting stock availability.

I personally prefer spring planting over fall planting :-)
