Every Fall this time of year my house and neighbors are "stormed" by little bugs I assume are gnats [small enough to penetrate window screen]. They cover windows and doors and swarm you when you are outside. What are these pests and is there something to do about them. My grounds are dry

There are many different small gnat or gnat like insects that have lived happily outdoors all summer. As cooler weather approaches they begin to seek out warmer locations. Most fungus gnats feed on organic matter like landscape mulch, decaying leaves, composts, etc. The insects typically die once cold weather arrives and stays for several days. You may find relief using a common aerosol fly spray when they are present in large numbers outdoors.
