I have recently purchased a home in Georgia and my backyard is nothing but red clay. What is the best way about planting grass on this without calling a landscaper?I would like to do this myself and when is the best time to do this?

Chris:

I am located in Illinois, however the University of Georgia has several helpful on-line publications dealing with lawns. UGA has a very helpful turfgrass website, Popular UGA Turfgrass Articles - http://www.griffin.uga.edu/caes/turf/Articles/index.html The Lawns in Georgia, UGA Coop. Ext. Ser. Bulletin 773 contains a wealth of information on Georgia lawns, grass types, establishment, etc. It can be found at - http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubcd/b773-w.html In addition, The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has a website called "Georgia FACES", where you can e-mail questions to UGA educators on landscape issues - http://apps.caes.uga.edu/news/landscape.cfm This would be a good idea, since they can direct you to the appropriate turfgrass(es) for your part of Georgia and how to establish your lawn. Finally, your local extension office in Newton County is - 2186 Elm Street Covington, GA 30014-2429 770-784-2010 uge2217@uga.edu Hopefully, they should be able to help you as well. I hope this helps.
