Leyland Cypress or Arbovitae?

My son wants to plant a windbreak and privacy screen on his property in St. Jacob, Il. The property has no trees (was a corn and hay field), and is quite windy. Would you suggest Leyland cypress, arborvitae or some other evergreen to be the most successful under these conditions? TX

Hi Albert:

I would strongly encourage you to speak w/ your local IL Dept. of Natural Resources district forester regarding windbreak tree selection in Madison County, IL. Your local IDNR district forester can assist you in matching the proper tree species to the soils found on your son's property.
