Selling Pine Trees in Illinois

My friends father has about 60 large mature pine trees that he wants someone to come in and cut for firewood and haul away for free because he thinks they have no value and he wants to build a barn in the area they are. I told him he should check into a lumber company to see about selling/milling them. Is he right? So much is made from pine I just don't see how he wouldn't make a profit. Can you offer an opinion please?

Hi Amy:

Illinois is definitely a hardwood state and it is extremely difficult to sell pine here in Illinois -- the vast majority of timber buyers don't want it because there is no nearby markets for it.

A custom sawmill operator may be your best bet:

Best of luck!
