Wheat Disease Workshop a Success

The research center hosted a very successful Wheat Disease Identification & Management Workshop on Tuesday, May 8. Participants had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Carl Bradley, Extension Plant Pathologist, and tour his misted fusarium head scab nursery where he is conducting fungicide efficacy research. In addition the group toured Dr. Fred Kolb's wheat breeding trials, and Crop Science's Wheat Variety Testing trials. Participants had the opportunity to identify bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases of wheat "hands on," and discuss various wheat disease management practices.

As the picture above indicates, it was interesting to observe the extreme differences in varietal susceptibility between the different wheat varieties. It emphasises the importance of plant breeding and selection in the management of crop disease pathogens such as fusarium head blight and stripe rust.
