Master Gardeners

Master Gardeners

Interested in Becoming a Master Gardener?

The University of Illinois is looking for individuals interested in becoming a Master Gardener. Master Gardeners are adults of all ages who love gardening and are interested in expanding their gardening knowledge while also giving back to the community.

The Master Gardener program started in Illinois in 1975 under the direction of Floyd Giles, a former Extension Horticultural Specialist. Last year 683 people graduated the program. In 2011 more than 3400 Master Gardeners gave back more than 190,000 volunteer hours to the state.

You can become a Master Gardener if you have some knowledge or experience in gardening or landscape management, you are willing to learn about horticulture and share this knowledge with others, and you can give at least 30 hours of volunteer time a year.
