Marion County 4-H Member Earns Top Swine Award at Master Showmanship Contest

In its 18th year at the Illinois State Fair, the Master Showmanship Contest brings the best livestock exhibitors from around the state together for one elite contest. Up for grabs are more than $8,000 in prizes and the title of “Illinois Master Showman.”

This year, a Logan County 4-H member claimed the honor of master showman. Lukas Aylesworth, Mt. Pulaski, is the son of Rick and Debby Aylesworth. The 2017 Master Showmanship Contest was held Aug. 11 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds with 56 exhibitors advancing from county competitions. The contest was coordinated by the Illinois Farm Bureau and RFD Radio Network.

Exhibitors were judged on their handling of each of three species of animals; beef, sheep and swine, and also quizzed on their knowledge of animal husbandry and livestock production. One winner was named for each species and scores for all three species were tallied to determine the overall winner.

Mackenzie Burgin from Paris in Edgar County earned the overall second place. She is the daughter of Dee Burgin and Lisa Spillman Burgin. She also placed first in the beef division. Lucas Wisnefski from Wyoming in Stark County placed third. He is the son of Jeff and Laurie Wisnefski.

Edward N. “E.N.” Hanson IV from Clifton in Iroquois County earned the top award in sheep. He is the son of Ed and Tasha Hanson. Adrian Austin from Mt. Vernon in Marion County earned the top award in swine. She is the daughter of Steve & Holly Austin.
