Fall Nature Series 2016

University of Illinois Extension is offering a Fall evening nature series for families at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve.  Families can learn about what goes on in the forest when they aren’t present.  They will learn how animals find their way through the darkness, why they come out at night, and much more.  Everyone will leave with a new comfort for the outdoors at night. The hour-long program will start indoors and end with a night hike through the woods.

The next program will be on November 8th at 6 p.m., and we will cover Everything Owl.  We will explore why owls are active in winter, why they make pellets, how they fly silently through the night sky, and much more. This fun learning adventure will include an indoor owl conversation, and then a night hike with an attempt to call in owls.

Our last in the series, will be December 6th at 6 p.m.  Come join us for Howl in the Holidays, when we will focus on the notorious coyote.  Coyotes are one of the most misunderstood species in Illinois. They conjure up feelings of fear and anger, and for some, wild beauty.  There are many stories about coyotes, one of which portrays them as the jokester of the wild.  Unfortunately, coyotes get blamed for many things they do and don’t do in our spaces.  Come and hear stories and information about this incredible animal and what you can expect from them in your neighborhood.

All topics will be presented by Peggy Doty, the University of Illinois Extension Educator for Energy and Environmental Stewardship. Please call the Natural Resource Education Center at 815-784-2000 to register your family.  There is a $3.00 per person fee and you can attend any one program or all. Please dress for the weather and join us for an evening in the woods.
