News Release

Food Stamps Grow Gardens!

SNAP Benefits grow gardens! According to the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) “Eligible Food Items” list, households can use SNAP benefits to buy seeds and plants that produce food for the household to eat (USDA, 2016). Any authorized SNAP retailer can sell food-producing plants and seeds, including Farmers’ Markets. Food-producing plants and seeds can be carrots, leafy greens, tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, peppers, beets, radishes, squash, berries, and more.

There are many benefits to growing fruits and vegetables at home.  Access to nutritious foods is increased, new gardening knowledge and skills are gained, and there are cost benefits as well. For every dollar home gardeners spend on growing materials, it is estimated that an average of $25 worth of produce is yielded (USDA, 2011). When children are involved, gardening can inspire them to take an interest in nature, science, and cooking.

For more information on gardening basics, successful container gardening, growing and harvesting garden vegetables, composting, and more, please visit University of Illinois Extension Horticulture website (  To locate a store near you that welcomes SNAP EBT customers, please use the “SNAP Retailer Locator” located on the USDA’s website (
