Midland Third Grade Participate in “Community Beneath My Feet”

Midland Third Grade Participate in “Community Beneath My Feet”

“Community Beneath My Feet” was brought to Midland third grade classrooms by Midland FFA members, Hannah Meffert and Matthew Connolly.  This program is arranged by University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom. The humorous skit tells the story of Mr. Talltower, a city transplant who has acquired a nice country home with a spacious lawn. Much to his dismay the lawn has dandelions. Reaching for the PestX box he is about to kill the intruders as well as every living creature when the Integrated Pest Manager (IPM) played by Hannah enters. With the help of the students, she proceeds to educate Mr. Talltower on the importance of reading labels. The pesticide would have killed the dandelions as well as all the beneficial insects and insect predators that live in the soil. In the end he learned that for small problems it might be best to manually remove the offending weeds. Following the skit, third grade students made a paper folding game about beneficial insects. Hannah and Matthew concluded the lesson by leading the students in an energetic FFA song.    For more information call University of Illinois Extension – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit Office at 815-224-0889.
