Fieldcrest Fifth Grade Students Solve Soil Break Out Box Dilemma

Fieldcrest Fifth Grade Students Solve Soil Break Out Box Dilemma

“We did it! We solved the clues and successfully unlocked four locks to open the Soil Break Out Box!”  Fifth grade students in Mrs. Lindenbaum’s class at Fieldcrest Intermediate recently participated in the Soil Escape Box activity provided by University of Illinois Extension Marshall Putnam Ag in the Classroom. Working as a team of four or five, students were told of Likeable Louie, the new groundskeeper at Hill Valley Grade. Unfortunately, Louie has forgotten the combination to the tool shed which houses his equipment. Students sifted through a packet of information on soil properties to decipher clues that would unlock the word lock, 3-digit number lock, directional lock, and 4-digit lock. Along the way they read about soil from several sources and discussed possible solutions. When they were stuck, additional clues helped them over the hurdle.  Break Out Box activities are a popular way to encourage students to work as a team and think creatively.   At the end of the experience one student summed it up: “This was fun!” For more information call University of Illinois Extension – Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, Putnam Unit Office at 815-224-0889.
