Purpose Nature & Scope of Position
The part-time, Visiting Urban Student Internship Program
Educator, will work with not-for-profit groups, organizations,
public and private schools, and universities and community
colleges in connecting students with meaningful field experiences
in identified communities in the Cook County area. Primary
efforts will be with organizations and agencies in high risk
and limited resource communities.
The part-time, Visiting Urban Student Internship Program
Educator, is an academic professional staff member with primary
responsibility for delivering educational programs supporting
the local mission of University of Illinois Extension. The
Educator will work as a team member with the District Coordinator,
other Educators and Extension Specialists to assess needs,
determine program priorities and deliver and evaluate high
quality programs within the unit. The Educator fosters sensitivity
to the needs of diverse audiences while working with the
local leadership in program planning.
This is a part-time (50%), temporary, academic professional
position. This position may become regular at a later time
depending on the availability of funds, continuing program
demands and satisfactory performance. Likewise, future
increases in percent time will be dependent on funding availability. Note:
This is a security-sensitive position. Comprehensive
background checks, including but not limited to a criminal
conviction information check, a CANTS (Child Abuse and Neglect
Tracking System) check, and a review of the Registered Sex
Offender list, will be conducted.
Administrative Accountability
The individual in this position is administratively responsible
to the University of Illinois Extension Assistant Dean, Urban
and Metropolitan Affairs with assistance from the Cook County
Extension Director for program leadership, guidance and supervision.
Location
Designated Extension District in South Cook County
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Recruit agencies and organizations to participate
in Urban Intern Program. Network and/or collaborate
with community agencies and organizations to identify
opportunities and needs; create or link these to student
internship programs.
- Develop an organizational network
for student interns.
- Work with students one-on-one and in
small group settings to discuss their experience and provide
guidance and support as necessary.
- Provide local program
leadership, interpret and integrate information, provide
educational opportunities in the field of designated expertise,
maintain competencies to develop and deliver educational
programming/initiatives and assist clients with the appropriate
resource bases.
- Develop promotion and marketing materials.
- Conduct orientation
and training for student interns and cooperating agencies
and organizations.
- Design and implement field experience
plan for students with local agencies in cooperation with
high schools, colleges, and universities
- Prepare reports,
conduct surveys and evaluations of student experiences
- Participate
in professional development opportunities to maintain professional
competence and skills
- Prepare grants and seek funding for
internship programs

Qualifications
Required
- Masters degree from an accredited institution of high
education in a field related to position. Candidates
with a Masters degree in progress may be considered
for interviews; however, the Masters degree must be
completed by the date of hire.
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience working with student interns
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in urban
central city school system or neighborhood not-for-profit
agency
- Success in working with diverse cultural groups
- Some knowledge and experience in program planning,
promotion and resource development
Preferred
- Teaching experiences in formal or informal setting
- Proven ability to work independently
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Personal mobility/transportation
