Extension Unit Leader, Pike County

Nature & Purpose of Work

The Extension Unit Leader is an academic professional staff member with primary responsibility for giving leadership to and communicating the local educational mission of University of Illinois Extension.  The primary responsibilities of the Unit Leader are to provide for program development and delivery, personnel management and fiscal management.  The Unit Leader is the local representative of and positively positions the University of Illinois in the unit.  The Unit Leader facilitates and establishes relationships with a broad range of audiences, collaborating and partnering with people to improve lives of individuals and the communities in which they live. 

The Unit Leader will use professional experience, academic training, and networks created in the community and on campus to implement the plan of work.  This is a regular, full-time, 12-month, academic professional position.

This is a security-sensitive position. Comprehensive background checks, including but not limited to a criminal conviction information check, a CANTS (Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System) check, and a review of the Registered Sex Offender list, will be conducted.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with the total University of Illinois Extension program in Pike County.
  • Provide leadership, with Extension Educators, and Unit Educator, and other unit staff in developing plan of work based on the assessed county needs.
  • Be instrumental in the planning and implementation of educational activities between the county and Extension Educators in the Extension Centers.
  • Supervise and assist county civil service staff employees in planning, developing and delivering of the programs and assess the needs and opportunities for program delivery.
  • Share responsibility with Extension Educators, Unit Educator and Extension Specialists in conducting evaluations for program improvement, impact analysis, and accountability.  Share the results with local groups, decision-makers, and administrators.
  • Develop a plan for involving volunteers in specific educational programs, which includes recruitment, training, support and recognition.
  • Train the Extension council on the mission, vision and values of University of Illinois Extension.  Provide specific guidance on their advisory role and assist them in their responsibility of addressing the needs of the county.
  • Develop marketing plans and goals to recruit participants for educational programs and develop advertising and publicity for the programs.
  • Disseminate information and assist the Extension Educators and Unit Educator in a teaching role when appropriate.
  • Be aware of and adhere to University of Illinois and University of Illinois Extension fiscal policies and carry out the county’s fiscal and reporting responsibilities.
  • Be aware of and adhere to University of Illinois and University of Illinois Extension policies and rules, federal and state personnel regulations, and negotiated contracts and supervise office personnel as designated.
  • Manage office facilities. 
  • Share responsibility with the Extension council leadership to secure the needed county resources to maintain and enhance the county’s educational opportunities.
  • Participate in the prescribed professional development program and seek additional opportunities to maintain professional competence through in-service education, formal coursework, personal study, and periodic study leaves.
  • Facilitate the professional development of civil service staff in the office.

  • Perform other duties that contribute to University of Illinois Extension programming, as assigned.

Administrative Relationship

The Extension Unit Leader is administratively responsible to the University of Illinois Extension West Central Regional Director.

Qualifications Required

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Appropriate fields of study include adult and continuing education, public administration, educational leadership, business administration, community development, communications, Extension education, or equivalent.  Candidates with a Master’s degree in progress may be considered for interviews; however, the Master’s degree must be completed by the date of hire.  All current U of I Extension Educators and Unit Leaders are also eligible to apply for this position.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and written.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be self-directing.
  • Personal mobility/transportation.

Qualifications Preferred

  • An understanding of and experience with University of Illinois.
  • Practical experience in needs assessment, program development and delivery, teaching, and marketing.
  • Fiscal, office and personnel management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and strengthen diverse networks.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and teamwork.
  • Computer literacy
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Experience with grant writing and administration.
  

Salary

Commensurate with professional qualifications and experience.  Base salary with MS Degree and no experience is $32,000.
