Many Illinois Streams Have Been Channelized

Many Illinois streams have been channelized (straightened) to improve runoff rates.

The increased energy of this more rapidly moving water increases both streambank and streambed erosion.

It is estimated that between 6-8 percent of Illinois’ interior stream miles are eroding at excessive rates contributing a huge excess of sediment into the system.
