WOW – we are up and running with a couple of busy months ahead ~ Archery, Beef Clinic, 4-H Horse & Pony Tack Auction, "Funshops", Livestock Nutrition Workshop, Fair Oaks Farm visit and MORE! We have loads of great programs planned that the entire family can enjoy this month, so don't miss out!
We'd like to welcome all of our new members and we hope that your 4-H experience is a great one! Let us know what we can do to help you get the most out of being a 4-H member. We want to help you "make the best better."

Clark, Crawford and Edgar County 4-H'ers and friends had to postpone their trip to Paoli Peaks on Jan. 29. The ski trip has been rescheduled for Sun. Feb. 12th! Hope everyone can still attend!
We made plans for our upcoming Carnival and Volunteer "Thank Yous" at our last Federation meeting in January.
The next Federation meeting will be held on Monday, February 27, 6:30 PM at the Extension Office. High School 4-H'ers, be thinking about where you might like to job shadow over Spring Break!

SKATING PARTY at PARIS – MARCH 16
A 4-H skating party will be held on Thursday, March 16, 6:00-8:00 PM at the Twin Lakes Roller Rink (north side of Paris, past Twin Lakes on IL Hwy 1). There will be a $1.50 fee for skate rental ($3.00 for speed skates and $3.50 for in-line skates). The party is open to all 4-H'ers and their families. Cloverbuds are welcome to come too!
FEBRUARY 4-H “FUNSHOPS”
You are guaranteed to have a great time at the February Funshop! Kids, you'll learn about Honey Bees and their habitats, taste some honey treats, learn to do the waggle dance and LOTS MORE!
The cost will be $2 per participant and open to all area youth 8 years old and older. Funshops start afterschool from 3:15-4:30 PM. Please ( the Extension Office at 826-5422 to pre-register. Space Limited!

4-H TRIP TO FAIR OAKS FARM, INDIANA!
What a great trip – we'll board a coach bus in Paris and travel to Fair Oaks Farm on Saturday, March 11, leaving at 7:30 AM and returning near 6 PM. Spend the day enjoying the Dairy, Swine and Crops adventures along with a box lunch, all for only $15 per person! It'll be FUN for the whole family, Cloverbud families are welcome too! SHOOTING SPORTS CLUB TO MEET
The Clark County 4-H Archery Shooting Sports Club is up and running! The Archery club instructor Dusty Hickox along with his assistants have 30 kids participating in the sport! They began in January and will meet the second and fourth Thursday of the month through March at the Country Archery Shop, south of Casey.
4-H Shooting Sports Spring Adult Certification TrainingThe spring training for those adults interested in joining the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program as a volunteer leader will be held May 5-7, 2017. Adult volunteers are an important part of the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program. All 4-H shooting sports clubs must be led by adults who have completed the training and passed the certification test. Instructors are needed in all disciplines of pistol, shotgun, rifle, archery and wildlife, as well as coordinator positions. Cost is $125 (Clark Co. will pay for any interested adults who qualify), and registration is handled through the local office by mid-April.
SUMMER 4-H CAMP – Early bird gets the worm… and a spot at 4-H Camp!
Camp registration at 4-H Memorial Camp opened in January! Current 4-H members get an "Early-Bird" Discount of $35 if they register by March 31. Come to camp - kayaks, climbing wall, zip line, swimming beach, dodge ball, and your cabin mates will miss you if you wait too long!!
You may choose any of the four weeks of 4-H camp to attend: June 4 – 8; June 11 – 15; June 25 – 29; June 30 – July 4. Register online at: web.extension.illinois.edu/4hmemorialcamp. Cost is $195 for 4-H'ers ($160 for Clark County 4-H'ers) until the March 31st early bird deadline.
LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM
Do YOU have an interest in learning more about livestock? Then join other Clark County 4-H'ers as they practice for the judging team! Practices are held each Monday (except the 2nd Monday of the month) at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church (south of Marshall on Grand Turn Rd) at 6 PM. Angie Vanatta is coaching the team. If you are interested, call the Extension Office at 826-5422 or Angie at 217-276-2216.
SWINE ID TAG PICK UP & MANDATORY MEETING FOR NEW EXHIBITORS
Swine exhibitors, pick up your swine tags at the Clark County Extension Office from April 3-7. A short MANDATORY meeting will be held for all NEW SWINE EXHIBITOR FAMILIES on Wednesday, April 5 from 6-6:30 PM at the Clark County Extension Office. Anyone planning to show market pigs at the 2017 Clark Co. 4-H Fair must plan to pick up tags for their animals during the week of April 3-7 during office hours 8-4:30 PM or on Wednesday from 6-6:30 PM during the mandatory meeting.
New exhibitors - there will be a short training to learn the best practices to protect your 4-H pigs from virus and diseases, learn helpful tips for raising your animals, as well as picking up ID tags and a Swine Nomination Form. These forms must be returned by May 1 with two pictures (one of each side of each pig, showing that the pigs have already been tagged) you are planning to exhibit at the 4-H Fair. Forms MUST be returned to the Extension Office before Monday, May 1. NOTE – ALL NEW families MUST send a representative to this meeting April 5, even if your 4-H'er cannot attend.
Sheep ID Day will be held on Saturday, April 22, 9 AM at the Martinsville Fairgrounds. Members who will be showing market animals at the 2017 Clark County 4-H Fair will need to weigh-in their livestock that day. Market lambs to be shown at the IL State Fair will ALSO need to be weighed-in and identified at a regional site in May.
ALL SMALL ANIMAL & LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS !!
Online ethics certification required for everyone taking 4-H animal projects -
All 4-H members enrolled in an animal project area are required to complete the online Quality Assurance and Ethics course one time in order to stay enrolled in an animal project area.
The certification must be done if you are enrolled in one of the following projects: beef, dairy, cats, dogs, goats, horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine. Members who don't complete the certification before the show will be removed from the project and not be allowed to show. Anyone who has already taken the certification does not need to retake the test. The local office has a list of those already certified. The website is located online at: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/. This rule applies to 4-H members who exhibit live animals AND poster exhibits.
HORSE BOWL & HIPPOLOGY
Clark County team members will be competing in the East Central and West Central Regional Horse Bowl and Hippology Contest on Saturday, April 1 at the Nazarene Church in Casey. Those that qualify will attend the State competition April 29-30 in Champaign. Members have been meeting each Monday since October to get ready for these competitions. Anyone still interested in joining may contact the Extension Office or Ruth. Good luck to those team members and Coach Ruth Stewart.

The 12th Annual Clark Co. Horse & Pony Tack Auction will be held on Sat. February 18 at the Clark County Extension Office. The doors will open at 3:00 PM (IL time) with the auction beginning at 4:00 PM. 4-H'ers, don't forget to consign your used tack!
New tack, supplied by a tack dealer, will be auctioned along with miscellaneous items donated by area businesses and individuals. Chili, BBQ, hot dogs, loaded nachos, desserts, drinks and more will be offered at the concession.
You may also win a door prize (must be present to win.) Proceeds will benefit the Clark County 4-H Horse and Pony Program.

Fair Oaks Dairy 4-H Family Trip - Clark County

Join us for the Clark County 4-H Family Trip to Fair Oaks Farms in Fair Oaks, Indiana on Saturday, March 11. Cost to attend is $15 per person and is payable online at this website or at the Clark County Extension office. A seat will be reserved upon receipt of the payment. Registrations will be accepted until the bus is filled or the deadline of February 23.

It's our own version of "Chopped."
Thursday, March 2, 6:30 PM, Clark County Extension Office.
Up to 3 teams may participate from each county. (First come, first serve registration)
Teams should consist of 3 - 5 members. If younger members make up a team, one adult may serve as a member.
Each team will be provided with ingredients that must be used in their recipe. There will also be a "pantry" with optional ingredients. Teams are challenged with being creative and developing their own recipe with the ingredients provided.
A list of the necessary equipment will be provided to the teams prior to the event. Some items will be provided.
Teams will have a set amount of time to prepare their dish using the provided ingredients. Each team will present their dish to the panel of judges.
Resource materials will be provided to the team prior to the event. Teams may be asked general questions about "MyPlate" nutritional information and food preservation. Judging will also include food appearance and quality and presentation skills of group.

BIGGER, BETTER, BOLDER IN 2017
The 2017 4-H Illini Summer Academies will see some cool changes this year. Be sure to save the dates of June 25-29!
The academies will be hosted in one of campus' newer living quarters, Bousefield Hall. We have new academies including Filmmaking, Performing Arts, and advanced sections Human Development and Family Studies and Micro Biology. Registration will open March 1 @ go.illinois.edu/illini4H. Check it out!!
WOMEN CHANGING THE FACE OF AGRICULTURE
Are you a young woman interested in a career in agriculture? Consider attending the "Women Changing the Face of Agriculture" Conference on the University of Illinois campus March 10. The keynote speaker is Elzandi Oosthuizen, vice president of global strategy at Monsanto.
Oosthuzien's 12-year career with Monsanto began in South Africa and includes global and regional roles in the seed and traits, crop production, and vegetable operations. The conference offers career advice and direction for young women in high school and college who are thinking about a career in agriculture. At the conference, women learn more about careers in the industry, network with women from across the country, and interact with others interested in similar careers. 4-H DAY WITH THE CARDINALS MAY 20
All 4-H families have a special invitation to attend a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants at the 2017 4-H Day with the Cardinals on May 20. The game will begin at 6:15 PM at Busch Stadium. Prior to the game, 4-H members and their parents/leaders can take part in a parade around the ball field!
4-H members who participate in the 4-H raffle have a chance to be selected to throw the first pitch. Other guests attending can win other great prizes!
If families want to sit together, please submit orders in the same envelope. Tickets for the game will be $25 each and includes a t-shirt. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 10 (don't wait until the deadline – tickets sell out FAST!
DOG OBEDIENCE SCHOOL SETAn organizational meeting for Dog Obedience will be held March 27 at 6:30 PM at the Clark Co. Extension Office. The schedule for the 10 weeks of training will be decided at the first meeting. Watch the March newsletter for more details!
4-H FOUNDATION CONDUCTS FUND DRIVE
Has your child received a scholarship to 4-H camp or conference, enjoyed the free publications they received or taken advantage of the 4-H workshops? If so, parents are encouraged to make a donation to the 4-H Foundation during their current fund drive.
The Foundation plays a very important role to the Extension budget and contributed over $30,000 to the Extension budget this year. This money is used for a variety of 4-H expenses including scholarships, publications, premiums and salaries. Any donations from 4-H parents would be welcome!
Children’s Art Show
GASLIGHT ART COLONY is preparing for the Children's Art Show, scheduled to open Saturday, Feb. 18, 5-8 PM at the Gaslight Art Colony in downtown Marshall. The art show will run through March 11th and feature original works of art created by any youth between the ages of 5–18. Young artists of all ages and levels of interest are encouraged to participate. Ribbons and small cash prizes will be awarded, there are no entry fees. The deadline for submission is Feb. 16. Two-dimensional work must be matted, framed, and ready for hanging in the gallery. Entries may be delivered to the Gaslight Art Colony during regular business hours on Tuesday 10-1, Wednesday–Friday 10-5, or Saturday 10-1. COLLEGE BOUND 4-H’ers CAN APPLY FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS!!
Scholarships available to High School Seniors –
Clark County Antique Power Club is offering three different scholarships – a $1,000, a $500 and an additional $500 in memory of Bob Maurer. These are offered to 2 or 4-year full time students in an agricultural field of study with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applications are available at the Clark Co. Extension Office. Application deadline is April 2, 2017!
The Clark County Farm Bureau - Scholarships are offered to a 2 or 4-year full time students studying in any field that benefits agriculture. The scholarship amount will be determined by the board. Families must be a Clark County Farm Bureau Member. Applications are on the web at clarkcfb.org and the deadline to apply is March 31, 2017.
4-H Scholarships – Start the Application Process Now!
Two scholarships are available to college-bound youth who have been 4-H members for at least five years. Both can be used at a 4-year university, community college, or trade school. Applications are due March 1 and open to high school seniors and college freshmen.
The Illinois 4-H Livestock Scholarship is open to members who have demonstrated mastery in the livestock area and plan to continue their education in the area of agriculture. Members must have been involved in the livestock project a minimum of three years. One $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year.
The Legacy of Leadership Scholarship is offered to members who have demonstrated overall mastery and leadership in the 4-H program. Eight $1000 scholarships are awarded each year.
Scholarship applications are available at go.illinois.edu/4Hscholarships. Applications are due March 1, 2017. If you're selected as one of the finalists, you'll be asked to submit a video of your 4-H accomplishments.
The State Fair Junior Horse Show Scholarship Program is open to 4-H and FFA members who are in their last year of membership eligibility and who have exhibited at the State Fair Jr. Horse Show at least once in the last three years. Applications must be postmarked no later than September 15.
The Superior Young Producer Scholarship Program is offered by the Illinois State Fair to 4-H and FFA members who are exhibiting in any of the following species at the State Fair: Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, and Horses. This contest-driven scholarship requires that the youth be a current exhibitor at the State Fair in the species for that contest. Registration is due by July 1; forms are available on the Illinois State Fair website.
Farm Credit Illinois Community Improvement Grants
DOING GOOD THINGS HAS ITS REWARDS!
When planning community outreach for the new 4-H year remember these funding opportunities to support 4-H Club Service Learning and/or Community Service opportunities!
Farm Credit Illinois Community Improvement Grants: Grants of $250 are available to 4-H clubs and FFA chapters for implementing valuable community improvement projects. Funds will be awarded to assist club and chapter members in bringing positive change by establishing projects that make local communities better places to live. Eligible clubs are those located in one of the counties served by Farm Credit Services Illinois which includes 14 Extension Units in southern & central Illinois.

A huge thank you to our 4-H Clubs for their great booths and help sponsoring this community event. Our 4-H families rocked it with all your help setting up, running games and clean up. WOW – what a great turn out of decorated cakes and delicious goodies at the concession stand! Our winners of the 2017 4-H Carnival included Casey Achievers for the prettiest booth; Clovers for the Most Original; and Pikes Peak for Most Fun. A special CONGRATULATIONS goes to King – Nate Winnett of Casey Achievers, Queen – Carson Foley of Clarksville Co-eds, Prince – R.J. Mattas of Triple T, and Princess – Addi Adams of Pikes Peak. YAY!

HEY, 4-H'ERS……REMEMBER OUR CLARK COUNTY 4-H ATTENDANCE POLICY!
· Youth that enroll in a 4-H Club must attend three club meetings, club tours or club activities before July 1 to be eligible to take part in the 4-H exhibitions at the Clark County 4-H Fair, receive 4-H premiums, 4-H Auction or other 4-H awards or recognitions.
· 4-H members enrolled in college must attend at least one club meeting, tours or club activity.
