Clay County 4-H members put months of work up for display and evaluation June 15-16 during the annual Clay County 4-H Show. The members exhibited food, clothing, art, science, health, community, and natural resource projects at the Community of Christ Church in Flora.
Volunteer judges evaluated each 4-H project against a score sheet which tested not only the craftsmanship of the project, but also the knowledge of the 4-H member during the conference judging time. Local volunteer judges included Sam Kessler, Allen Ritter, Alford Stewart, Roberta Biggs, Valinda Rowe, Patti Jenkins, Margie Dettmer, Rebecca Hubele, Marcy Fechtig, Sandy Thomas and Jeanne Harbin who donated their service to assist the 4-H members improve their project work.
In addition to their A or B rating, members were eligible for several awards. One "Best in Class" (BC) exhibit was selected in each project division of the show. Those projects then competed for overall "Best of Show" (BS) trophies in the 10 major project categories. Members who were at least 10 years of age by Sept. 1, 2011 could compete for the right to exhibit at the state fair (SF). A new "Superior" (S) ribbon was added this year for judges to award at their discretion for any project they felt was exceptional in quality.
