Jasper County 4-H members put months of work up for display and evaluation June 21 during the annual Jasper County 4-H Show. The members exhibited food, clothing, art, science, health, community, and natural resource projects at the fairgrounds in Newton.
Volunteer judges evaluated each 4-H project against a score sheet which tested not only the craftsmanship of the project, but also the knowledge of the 4-H member during the conference judging time.
In addition to their A or B rating, members were eligible for several awards. One "Best in Class" (BC) exhibit was selected in each project division of the show. Those projects then competed for overall "Best of Show" awards in the 10 major project categories. Members who were at least 10 years of age by Sept. 1, 2011 competed for the right to exhibit at the state fair (SF) or as alternate. A new "Superior" (S) ribbon was added this year for judges to award at their discretion for any project they felt was exceptional in quality, and members who exhibited state fair quality projects but cannot attend the state fair received special recognition (SPR).
