Driving During the Holiday Weekend? Check out this useful phone app!

I love my smartphone! Why? Because it's like a handy toolbox that can hold lots of useful tools in a small amount of space.

Some of the "tools" or apps are ones that I use daily. Others I hope I don't have to use, but I like to have them "just in case." The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has a new mobile application that fits this description: the WreckCheck. With a three-day weekend coming up, and bad weather expected in Illinois, you might want to download this today. It's free and available for iPhone and Android users.

This auto accident checklist guides you through the steps to take following an accident. At the time of an accident it can be confusing to remember what information to ask for and what information to share with others involved in the accident. Providing too much information could put you at risk for identity theft. This app guides you through what to do at the accident site step-by-step. By using your mobile device's location service, audio recorder and camera, the app helps you document the accident.

I watched a video demonstration of the app and it looks very helpful to me. While I hope I don't need to use it soon, it is now a part of my toolbox on my smartphone.

If you don't have a smart phone, you can download a free Auto Accident Checklist from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.  I'd suggest keeping this in your glove compartment in your car.

For more information about creating an accident report, visit NAIC's website InsureU.

Safe driving and enjoy the holiday weekend!
