Christmas Trees and More

Posted by Aimee Chandler -

It is that time of year where many people are selecting a tree for their holiday decorating.  Did you know that Christmas trees come from a farm?  Many of the kids that I talk to don't know that.  There are farms that plant trees to become Christmas trees one day.  As some are chopped down and taken home more are planted.  University of Illinois Extension has a website to help you learn more about Christmas trees.  The site titled Christmas Trees and more can be found at http://urbanext.illinois.edu/trees/

Do you know what state grows the most Christmas trees?  What is the best way to care for your tree when it is in your home?  Where is the closest tree farm?  All of these questions and more can be found on this website.

Here are a few facts from the site to get you started:
- In the United States there are more than 21, 000 Christmas tree growers.
- Christmas trees take an average of 7-10 years to mature.
- There are over 500 Christmas Tree growers in Illinois.
- 30-35 million Real Christmas Trees are sold in the U.S. every year.
- 98 percent of all Christmas trees are grown on farms.
