Tree Program Underway

Posted by Aimee Chandler -

Last week started the fourth of five programs being offered to schools during the 2011-12 school year.  The program on Trees is making its way around the schools.   Students are learning about different categories of trees includuing fruit, shade, ornamental, and evergreen trees.  They are learning that we use trees everyday from the houses we live in to the pencil and paper they use for school work.  One lucky student in each class gets to dress up like a tree all decked out in roots, bark, flowers, fruit, leaves, and seeds.  Classes are also participating in activities that include acting out the life cycle of a tree and becoming the different parts of a tree trunk (heartwood, sapwood, phloem, bark, etc.).  To end the presentation students are given a leaf with a question on it that they must answer using what they have learned during the program.
