A new federal plan aims to reverse America's declining bee populations by making millions of acres of federal land more bee-friendly, spending millions of dollars more on research, and considering the use of fewer pesticides. Planting pollinator friendly landscapes along highways, federal housing projects, and federal natural areas will make a huge difference to starving bees because so much of the American landscape has been converted to lawns and crops that provide no foraging areas for bees.
We can thank May Berenbaum, University of Illinois entomologist, for buttonholing President Barack Obama about bees when she received her National Medal of Science award. Her comment on the announced plan was "I think it's brilliant".
You, too, can be brilliant by planting pollinator friendly pockets in your lawn and garden.
