Importance of Broadband to be Highlighted in Local Government Program

University of Illinois Extension Local Government Information & Education Network and the Illinois Association of County Board Members and Commissioners (IACBMC) will offer a local government program, "Importance of Broadband for Community Survival & How e-Government Changes the Way Services are Provided," on Thursday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m. The program will feature Barbara Webster, regional eTeam coordinator for Broadband Illinois and Dr. Jon Gant, Research Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, and Director of the Center for Digital Inclusion and Director of UC2B Broadband Adoption Operations.

For many businesses, medical providers and families, access to reliable, efficient internet services is essential for prosperity and growth. Ms. Barbara Webster will explore broadband as a vital component to economic development and a better quality of life within the local community. Her cutting-edge discussion will address the ever-increasing need for broadband service and ways communities are working to meet the need.

As governments embrace e-government and open government through information technology, new strategies are needed to use computer technology to reach and serve citizens and to facilitate democratic participation. Drawing on nearly 20 years of research, Dr. Gant's presentation will examine contemporary practices for managing and deploying e-government and will focus on the emerging use of social media and highlight the challenges of managing the information assets in the social media era.

The event is from 3:00-5:00 and will be broadcast over a statewide audio-teleconference system through Illinois county Extension offices. Contact your local Extension office to find a host site that is most convenient for you. Those registered in the Certified County Officials (CCO) Program may be eligible to receive two credit hours for attending.
