Zero Percent and Food Equity Group to Host Informational Meeting for Local Restaurants

Zero Percent in collaboration with the Food Equity Group and Einstein Bros. Bagels are inviting Champaign-Urbana restaurants to attend an informational meeting regarding how to use Zero Percent to reduce their food waste. The meeting will take place in the Champaign County Farm Bureau auditorium at 801 N. Country Fair Drive in Champaign on Monday, June 25th. Restaurant owners or managers are invited to attend one of two sessions held from 2:00 – 4:00 PM or 4:30 – 6:30 PM.

Zero Percent is a system designed to help restaurants move out excess food and hence eliminate food waste in their operations. It allows restaurants to post food donations and discounts in real-time. When a donation is posted on Zero Percent, the system immediately finds a volunteer, through text and app alerts, who picks up the donation and drops it off at a local food pantry or soup kitchen.

The Food Equity Group is comprised of local citizens dedicated to addressing healthy food access issues in Champaign-Urbana. They are excited about the opportunity to partner with Zero Percent to increase the amount of food available to local food pantries and soup kitchens, while reducing the amount of food that gets thrown out by local restaurants. In addition to presentations from Zero Percent and the Food Equity Group, attendees will hear from owners of Einstein Bros. Bagels about their experience using Zero Percent.

Restaurants interested in attending may RSVP to Zach Kennedy at kenned2@illinois.edu or 217-333-7672.
