Master Gardener Projects 2017
Master Gardener Projects
The Vermilion County Master Gardeners have established many projects that require their on-going volunteer time. Projects for 2017 include:
-Garden Walk: Master gardeners work with local gardeners offering the public the opportunity to view several local gardens this year on Sunday, June 11, 2017 Noon-5pm
Garden Day Workshop and Spring Festival: This annual event will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at DACC Bremer Conference Center. This fun and educational day includes speakers, shopping with garden themed venders, door prizes, a silent auction, and a homemade lunch. Keynote speaker is Doug Tallamy author of Bringing Nature Home
Atwood House Garden: Located at Kennekuk State Park, Master Gardeners maintain the gardens from spring to fall and help with new plantings of both flowers and vegetables. They participate in the Plant A Row program where they grow vegetables for local food pantries.
Aunt Martha's Center for Health ans Wellness: Master Gardeners work with the staff to plant and maintain garden for clients. Were featured on the 2015 Garden Walk and have an active garden prgram for children all year around.
Kennekuk Herb Garden: Master Gardeners plant and tend raised herb beds in the historic area. This garden was on the 2014 Garden Walk. The Herb Garden received certification from the Illinois Herb Society in 2015.
Plant Sale: Held Saturday, May 13, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church in Danville, 7am-2pm Master Gardeners sell mature plants, seedlings, and garden related items. Master Gardeners generally start the plants or take them from their own gardens.
Field Trips & Bus Trips: Organizes trips with educational components for Master Gardeners.
Radio Program: Provides an opportunity for the public to submit questions about gardening practices or concerns during a weekly radio show. It airs on Wednesdays on WDAN, our local radios station, at 5:00 PM.
Horticulture Help Line: Research calls made to Extension regarding plants, insects or diseases. Master Gardeners research and answer questions. 217-442-8615
VA Committee: Master Gardeners propagate, grow, and maintain plants in greenhouse. Some outdoor landscaping is done, as well as occasionally working with VA patients. The volunteer must go through a VA orientation. VA Healing Garden- Master gardeners work in an enclosed garden available to Veterans and their visitors. Volunteers must complete VA orientation to participate in this project. VA Outreach session work with veterans monthly to share horticulture knowledge.
Danville Public Library Children's Wonder Garden DPL has a children's garden club that meets weekly all year long. Master Gardeners design, plant and tend garden with the children.
Douglas Discovery Garden Master Gardeners help plan and plant flower and vegetable gardens with the local community. They educate the local neighborhood on growing annuals, perennials including flowers and vegetables.
-Tuesday Night Educational Classes held at the Danville Public Library -usually the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6pm (*unless indicated otherwise), 319 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. You may pre-register online or at the Extension Office. We are located across from the County Market at 3164 N. Vermilion.
