U of I Extension to Host Dudley Smith Farm Beef Cow-Calf Field Day June 15

University of Illinois Extension Unit 18 will be hosting the Dudley Smith Farm Beef Cow-Calf Field Day on June 15 at the University of Illinois Dudley Smith Farm located off Route 29 between Taylorville and Pana, IL. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the program will conclude at 12:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend and to learn more about the valuable research taking place on the Dudley Smith Farm. Lunch will be provided for those who preregister. The Dudley Smith Farm is located just off Route 29 between Taylorville and Pana, Illinois (2200 E. 600 North Rd.).
The first presenter will be Frank Ireland—Research Specialist at the University of Illinois - Dixon Springs Research Center. Frank’s presentation will key in on “Managing Different Types of Fescue Grasses in Illinois”. Ireland will discuss research projects involving Ky31 and Novel fescue, and how producers can use these combinations in their grazing programs in Illinois.
The program will also feature Ted Krauskopf a beef producer from Highland, IL. Ted will share: “The Role of High Density Grazing in Central Illinois”. He will highlight how and where he is using high density grazing in his grazing program, and the do’s and don’ts of high density grazing based on his years as a cattle producer.
Participants will also hear from Dr. Neal Merchen from the University of Illinois ACES Office of Research and information on upcoming research projects on the Dudley Smith farm. Dr. Merchen will also introduce many of the staff who will be working on a recently funded Dudley Smith Initiative dealing with nutrient management, crop production and water quality.
The program is free, however participants are asked to register by Friday, June 10 to enjoy a meal provided by University of Illinois Extension Christian County and prepared by Sav-A-Lot Foods Inc., Pana, IL.
