Extension Host Maker Girl 3-D Printing Workshop in Pana
June 7, 2016
On Friday, June 3, University of Illinois Extension and Christian County 4-H hosted Maker Girl Mobile, a non-profit organization founded by students at the University of Illinois in Champaign. The group traveled to Schulyer Library in Pana to implement a 3-D printing workshop. Nine girls ages 7-10 from Christian County attended this program and were able to experiment with computer design programs and 3-D printers. Students worked with the Tinkercad design program and Cura was the printing software used during this event. Youth engaged in the three step learning process of brainstorming, designing, and printing.
Maker Girl Mobile is designed to excite and inspire young girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) through 3-D printing sessions. Maker Girl will be traveling all summer to rural and underserved communities across the country. Their goal is to spark an interest in this under represented area at an early age by providing an environment for girls to learn, create, experiment, and engage in STEM activities.
Christian County 4-H is also hosting a 3-D design and printing entrepreneur camp July 5-7 at the Christian County Extension office in Taylorville. The “Maker Monkeys” camp is open to any youth grades 6-9th . For more information about this program or 4-H, please contact Alicia Gullidge, Christian County 4-H Program Coordinator, at the Extension office in Taylorville by phone 217-287-7246, or email at email@example.com, or online at: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/cjmm/christian4h/.
