CARLINVILLE, IL - University of Illinois Extension and Macoupin County 4-H recently hosted Jr. & Sr. Science Camps for youth ages 6-9 was held July 12, 13, & 14 at the Macoupin County Extension office in Carlinville, IL. Jr. Science Camp sessions were from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for youth ages 6-9, and Sr. Science Camp sessions were from 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. for youth ages 10-13 each day.

Beth Groves, University of Illinois Extension staff led the three day camp. Youth participated in hands-on activities and experiments that include chemistry, engineering, forensics and more.  Day one was filled with activities based on flight science. Day two was all about polymers where youth learned about the periodic table of elements and discussed atoms, molecules, and bonds. Day three focused on crime science. Youth worked with microscopes and made their own fingerprint observations. One activity that the students enjoy each year is making “Mentos Geysers” using diet soda and Mentos candies. Participants also received a camp t-shirt that they decorated using a special technique to separate and blend colors.
