Extension Cooks Up Fun with Jr Chef Culinary Camp in Pana

This summer University of Illinois Extension Unit 18 in cooperation with Illinois Nutrition Education Program-SNAP ED, & Illinois 4-H hosted “Illinois Jr Chef” a 4 day cooking camp in Pana. Reaching out to nearly 20 youth and utilizing volunteers from the community. The camp was held June 13-16 at the United in Faith Church in Pana from 9 am to Noon Daily. The free camps were open to children between the ages of 8-12 years from the Pana School District.  The camp offered kids the opportunity to make their own nutritious meals and get excited about healthy foods like whole grains, low fat dairy and also how to add more fruits and vegetables to their meals.  Participants not only learned how to prepare delicious and nutritious meals, but also hand washing and sanitation practices, as well as food and kitchen safety.  4-H participants in the Teen Teacher program were on hand to teach lessons and work with participants throughout this hands-on camp. Teen Teacher included: Ivy Fry, Brooke Bates and Lauren Bailey. The 4-H Teen Teacher program is sponsored by the Illinonis 4-H Foundation. Adult volunteers included: Linda Parkinson, Barb Buckley, Stella Oltmanns, Georgia Culumber, Cheryl Tedrick, Bonnie Fry, Pastor Bob, Sandy Herbord, Nina Elvers, and Elaine DeWerff.

The camp was coordinated with the United in Faith Church in Pana by Jodi Heberling, Community Worker, INEP Illinois Nutrition Education Program SNAP-ED. The program was made possible through a partnership with University of Illinois Extension, INEP, and 4-H.
