Extension Cooks Up Fun with “Jr Chef” Culinary Camp in Gillespie
August 16, 2016
This summer University of Illinois Extension Unit 18 in cooperation with SNAP ED, & 4-H hosted an “Illinois Jr Chef” cooking camp in Gillespie. The camp was held July 18-21 at the United Methodist Church in Gillespie. The free camp was open to children between the ages of 8-12 years. The camp offered kids the opportunity to make their own nutritious meals and get excited about healthy foods like whole grains, low fat dairy and also how to add more fruits and vegetables to their meals. Participants not only learned how to prepare delicious and nutritious meals, but also hand washing and sanitation practices, as well as food and kitchen safety. Adult volunteer Mr. Zimmerman, and Extension Summer Help Kaitlin Schuricht were present to assist participants throughout this hands-on camp.
All participants will receive a recipe book and kitchen utensils, as well as a certificate signifying their completion of the course. The camp was coordinated by Sharon Clagg, Community Worker, INEP Illinois Nutrition Education Program SNAP-ED. The program was made possible through a partnership with University of Illinois Extension, SNAP ED, and 4-H. United Methodist Church in Gillespie generously donated use of their facilities.
