GUY STERNBERG TO SPEAK ON IDENTIFICATION, MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION OF OAK WILT DISEASE

Oak wilt, caused by the fungus (Ceratocystis fagacearum), kills oak trees.  It has been found in 21 states, with considerable damage occurring in the Midwest. Although June is the month to start watching your oak trees for symptoms, the Christian County Master Gardeners are bringing an educational speaker to the area to educate the public on this disease, which progresses rapidly and kills some trees within one to two months of onset of symptoms. This is the deadliest of all pathogens affecting oaks in the 20 states surrounding Illinois, and infection centers have been found in the recent past throughout our area. Guy Sternberg, past president of the International Oak Society and director of Starhill Forest Arboretum (starhillforest.com) in Petersburg, Illinois, has dealt with this problem twice at the Arboretum (the largest botanical collection of oaks in North America) and will explain how to recognize, prevent and defeat it.  If you have an oak in your neighborhood, you need to see this program.

Please join us for this educational presentation on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. at the Christian County Extension office, 1120 N. Webster St., Taylorville, IL. 62568. There is no cost to attend this program. Registration is preferred (call the U of I Extension office at 217-287-7246) but walk-ins are welcome.
