Growing Produce and Hands-On Preserving Workshop Series Starting in Carlinville

Join University of Illinois Extension as Andrew Holsinger, Horticulture Educator and Lisa Peterson, Nutrition and Wellness Educator team up to provide a workshop on culture, care, pest management, and maintaining cucumber plants. Peterson will cover the nutritional benefits of cucumbers, conduct a food demonstration using cucumber, and participants will taste test recipes and water-bath can their own cucumber pickles to take home.
Participants will receive a packet of information on disease and pest management information on caring for cucumbers, information on the fermentation process, safe pickling practices, and a recipe booklet. The course will also give individuals the chance to explore the benefits of culture, care, and get to put their knowledge to work by water bath canning fresh cucumber pickles using garden cucumbers. This is a hands-on workshop.
This program will be held at the Macoupin County Extension Office in Carlinville, IL on Tuesday, June 6th from 10:00am-1:00pm. This class is part of the Unit 18 Eat Local Initiative and all costs are covered by a grant funded by the Lumpkin Family Foundation.
