University of Illinois Extension offering Youth Program on Growing and Cooking with Herbs

New to Herbs? Youth can join Horticulture Educator, Andrew Holsinger and Lisa Peterson, Nutrition and Wellness Educator for a fun morning learning more about herbs. Youth will get the opportunity to get their hands dirty and pot some herbs to take home and make a recipe using fresh herbs. This is a hands-on workshop where youth learn how to best care for potted herbs, and make their own pesto using fresh basil for homemade pizza, as well as make salsa using fresh cilantro. Youth will also get the chance to taste test a different herbs and learn the best methods for cooking and preparing food with fresh herbs while omitting salt.
Participants do not have to be members of 4-H to participate in the class. Any child between the ages of 7-17 is welcome to join. Parents or guardians are also welcome to stay. The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Christian County Extension Office in Taylorville on Saturday June 17. The class is part of the Unit 18 Eat Local Initiative with funding provided through a Lumpkin Family Foundation grant.
