Montgomery County 4th Graders Learn How to Stay Safe at Annual Safety Day

University of Illinois Extension hosted over 300 4th graders at the Montgomery County Safety Day. The daylong program was held at the Montgomery County 4-H Park in Butler on May 2. Students from Nokomis North Elementary, St. Louis Catholic School in Nokomis, Raymond Grade School, Beckemeyer Elementary from Hillsboro, Russell Elementary from Litchfield, and Zion Lutheran from Litchfield participated in the program.
Students rotated to 13 different stations throughout the day, each covering a different safety related topic. Those presentations included: Railroad Safety (Operation Lifesaver Educators, Elaine Cortivo and John Plebanek); Medical Emergency Identification (Hillsboro Ambulance: Krista Wineberner); Digging Safely (J.U.L.I.E Damage Prevention, Brian MacKenzie); Fire Safety (Hillsboro Fire Department); Be Safe, Don't Smoke (Montgomery County Health Dept and St. Francis Hospital, Chris Boston and Meghan Bertolino); Farm Safety (Montgomery County Young Farmers, Heath Houck); Grain bin and PTO Safety (Farm Service Agency, Eric Pastrovich, Rachel Vandenbergh); Electricity Safety (MJM and Rural Electric, Charlie Peterson); Handwashing (U of I Extension Educator Lisa Peterson); Animal Safety (Montgomery County Animal Control, Amanda Daniels); Bike Safety (Illinois Secretary of State's office, Ann Ashby); Lawn Mower Safety (U of I Extension Educator, Gary Letterly); and The Pillowcase Project (American Red Cross, Manny Caga-anan).
