Summer Lunch Program Participants Discover Locally Grown Produce
August 10, 2017
HILLSBORO, Ill. - This summer, University of Illinois Extension Unit 18, in cooperation with the Eat Local Initiative, hosted a two-month program at the Hillsboro Area Hospital in Hillsboro. The camp was free to the participants of the hospital’s Summer Lunch Program. The kids used the "Got Veggies Curriculum" every Friday from June until the last week in July. The hour sessions involved taste testing seasonally & local foods, learning about what foods grow in Illinois and growing their own food in small bag gardens at the hospital. They also had the opportunity to tour the Anderson Pumpkin Farm in Hillsboro, IL and Kern Family Orchard in Raymond, IL. During the last session, the kids were able to take home their garden bags to keep as their own garden, received cooking aprons, and made salsa using seasonally grown vegetables.
The Eat Local Initiative was developed to make the public more aware of local food providers available in central Illinois and how to create nutritious meals using local produce. The Eat Local Initiative also connects producers to local markets. Residents of Christian, Jersey, Macoupin, and Montgomery County continue to support each other in making positive, healthy lifestyle choices. The program was available thanks to the generous donation from the Lumpkin Family Foundation Eat Local Grant.
