C.L.M.T. Quiz - Software Instruction

Once you have your Certified Livestock Manager Training manual, sign-on and password (there are 2 passwords), and have read the lessons in the manual for each quiz, you will be ready to start the quiz process. It is to your benefit to read the appropriate lessons before taking a quiz. The quizzes are timed, therefore it will be difficult to try and look up each and every answer in a given chapter. These quizzes are not intended to be an open book exam.

The CLMT Quiz program uses an on-line teaching program called Illinois Compass. Users can access the Illinois Compass platform through a web browser after receiving a sign-on and password. Some of the quiz files may load slowly if you have slow dial-up Internet access, you may find viewing the files time consuming, and frustrating. We have tried to keep the size of the quiz files small to minimize problems. Users with a minimum of 256 bandwidth, DSL or better Internet connection should have no problems connecting and utilizing the quizzes. The Illinois Compass software you will use resides on a server (a central host computer) on the University of Illinois campus. You will want to be sure that your computer's settings are optimized for running an online course. Illinois Compass uses Java technology extensively. In order for Compass to work properly, you need to have the appropriate Java plug-in installed on your computer. To get the most recent version of the Java plug in for your windows computer, go to www.java.com, click on the Free Java Download button and follow the directions. Macintosh users receive Java updates automatically via their software update control panel.

NOTE: The quizzes connected with the correspondence-course option DO NOT take the place of the Illinois Department of Agriculture state-administered exam, WHICH IS STILL REQUIRED FOR ALL LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS WITH OVER 1,000 ANIMAL UNITS.
To take a quiz:

Have a calculator and pencil or pen available for your use.

1. Start your web browser (i.e.; Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari) and go to the Quiz web page at: https://compass.illinois.edu/webct/logon/2277390827061. This will bring up the Illinois Compass Login screen. NOTE - address is https NOT http - Big difference!

2. Type in your NetID (case sensitive) and then click the cursor in the AD Password box and enter your 1st password. Then click on Log In icon.

3. You should on what's called the HOME PAGE. The quizzes should be visible. You can click on the blue text to start taking a quiz. Please note, when you do this you will be asked for your 2nd password. Click your cursor in the Password box and type in the 2nd password. If you are ready to take the quiz then click on the icon Begin Assessment to start taking a quiz. This will count as one attempt and the timer will begin running.

4. Please click on the Announcements icon and read any late-breaking announcements.

5. Questions are answered by clicking on the "bubble" next to your answer, then click on the Save Answer icon and proceed to the next question. All answers can be changed at any time BEFORE you click on the FINISH icon. Just change the answer and then click on Save Answer.

6. Answer all the questions. When you are done click on the FINISH icon after the last question. The Compass program will grade your answers in only a few seconds.

7. A message box will appear saying your quiz has been submitted. Click on the OK icon to see your score. Clicking on View all Submissions (then click on attempt) to see how you did on the quiz and which questions you got right (100%) or missed (0%). The correct answers are not shown, but you can probably figure it out. When you are done reviewing your score and the questions, click on the Done icon at the top or bottom of the page.

8. If your grade for this submission is higher than the minimum passing score, you have successfully passed that quiz. If you did not pass the quiz, clicking on the Course Content icon on the left side of the page will return you to the Home Page, where you can re-take the same quiz to try and improve your score, or take a different quiz. Compass will keep and count your highest score of your 3 attempts for each quiz.

9. If you passed the quiz, you can go to the Home Page to take another quiz or logout.
