Signs of Progress Sought as EAB Plague Keeps Spreading

The emerald ash borer beetle has been confirmed in 22 additional suburban communities this spring as the battle against the exotic tree-killer continues, including with the newest weapon – a parasitic wasp.

Michigan researchers will return this year to determine whether 300 Oobius wasps released in Chicago and Evanston established a population. Local officials acknowledge that the news may not be good.

Joliet, IL to Cut Down Ash Trees

The tree-killing emerald ash borer has been found in several locations across Joliet, the city arborist says.

The bug, which kills only ash trees, was first detected in Joliet earlier this spring.

Joliet plans to cut down about 500 of the city's ash trees starting in late fall, according to a management plan given preliminary approval by the city council's land use committee this week. More ash trees would come down in future years. The plan goes to the full city council for final approval.

Spring 2011: EAB News

Check out the latest Emerald Ash Borer Newsletter from the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture.

One story details how the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the University of Illinois Extension in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Transportation commissioned the building of 33 kiosks made with reclaimed ash wood. The wood, taken from an EAB-infested IDOT Rest Stop along I-57 in Loda, Illinois, was harvested, milled and made into lumber for the project. Four cabinet makers submitted their designs and each were given a certain number to create. The kiosks are intended to be placed in the 33 rest areas around Illinois' highways to educate the millions of travelers who visit these areas annually. The kiosks will contain information about EAB, its size, shape, and visuals of the damage EAB causes. The message will emphasize the importance of not moving firewood.
