Unknown Plant ID

You have a plant growing somewhere and you don’t know what it is. It may be pretty or it may be over-running an area. What is it and what can or should you do about it?

  • If you decide to bring it in to your local University of Illinois Extension Office, bring in as much as possible.
  • Please bring in a live plant.
  • When possible dig up a whole plant with roots.

  • If it is potentially a plant you may want to keep, bring in a branch or shoot that includes stems, leaves and flowers (if present).

  • Wrap the roots in dry paper towels and gently put sample into an unsealed plastic bag or sack.
  • Do not leave sample in strong sunlight!
  • Bring in as soon as possible.
