Holiday Gifts from your Kitchen and Garden


Deciding what to give as gifts this season can be a challenging and expensive task. So why not make your own to make it easier? There are many ingredients already in your kitchen and growing in your garden that can be used to make beautiful and tasty gifts at an inexpensive cost.

Herbs are one of those ingredients that you probably already have in your spice cabinet. If not, there are many easy herbs that you can grow in your garden or indoors. Basil, mint, parsley, chives, and sage are all easy to grow indoors in a southern or western facing window. Or start planning for next year's garden and plan to plant those outdoors, as well as many other perennial herbs like thyme or tarragon that grow great in your garden.

Here are some examples of the gifts that can be made using various items from your kitchen and garden:

Potpourri Sachet Bags

Ingredients:

  • Bay leaves
  • Whole Cloves
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Dried lemon, lime & orange slices
  • Mesh or muslin Bags

Insert all ingredients into the bag and enjoy. Crushing the herbs releases a bit more of the fragrance.

Pomander Balls

Ingredients:

  • Orange, lemon, or lime
  • Whole cloves
  • Ribbon

Insert cloves into the citrus in a decorative pattern. Wrap ribbon around the fruit to hang as an ornament or display in a bowl.

Terrarium Ornament

  • Large plastic ornament
  • Various mosses, branches, dried flowers and herbs
  • Air plants
  • Various accessories

Insert accessories and air plant into plastic ornament. Open ornament and mist air plant every week or so.

Ranch Herb Dip and Dressing Mix

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup dried parsley flakes
  • ¼ cup dried thyme leaves
  • 2 tablespoons dried tarragon leaves
  • 2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
  • 3 teaspoons garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

Directions:

 

  • Combine all and mix well.
  • Store in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Stir or shake before using.
  • Use as a seasoning in recipes.

 

Herb Mix Dip:

 

  • Use 1 tablespoon of the mix with ¾ cup sour cream,
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise, and 1 teaspoon lemon juice.
  • Blend well. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours.
  • Serve with assorted fresh vegetables.
The possibilities are endless with the gifts you can make from your kitchen and garden!
